Type 1 diabetes onset age linked to dementia risk and diagnostic challenges
A large-scale analysis of over 43,000 patients from the Swedish National Diabetes Register indicates that the age of onset for type 1 diabetes significantly influences long-term health outcomes. Specifically, individuals diagnosed with type 1 diabetes before the age of 10 face a 37% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those diagnosed between the ages of 18 and 30.
In addition to age-related risks, researchers are exploring genetic tools to improve diagnostic accuracy in young patients. A study involving over 1,000 insulin-dependent individuals investigated whether genetic risk scores could distinguish between rare monogenic forms of diabetes, such as MODY, and type 1 diabetes.
The findings suggest that genetic risk scores can be clinically useful, particularly in cases where standard genetic testing for MODY is inconclusive. Among patients where MODY tests provided no clear answer, the genetic score identified approximately 16% as having probable type 1 diabetes. This utility was notably higher in children under 10 years old, whereas the score's impact was more limited in adults.
