Medical University of Warsaw study finds sexual activity safe for type 1 diabetics

A new study conducted by Dr. Dominica Orłowska and colleagues at the Medical University of Warsaw indicates that sexual activity does not significantly increase the risk of clinically meaningful hypoglycemia in adults with type 1 diabetes.

Using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology, researchers analyzed 110 episodes involving 12 adults. The findings suggest that while glucose levels may fluctuate—with some participants seeing decreases and others increases—the variations do not pose a dangerous risk. The study noted that nocturnal activity was associated with a more significant reduction in glucose levels compared to daytime activity, but levels remained within a safe range.

This research, to be presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in Milan, addresses long-standing fears among patients that spontaneous physical activity during intimacy could lead to dangerous blood sugar drops, a concern that has previously impacted quality of life and intimacy.
