Typhoon Dolphin triggers mass evacuations and flight cancellations in Japan FAST-MOVING
Japanese authorities ordered the evacuation of nearly 260,000 residents in Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures as Typhoon Dolphin approached the southwestern islands. The storm, a Category 1 system, produced maximum sustained winds of 144 km/h with gusts up to 198 km/h and generated a linear rain band that could bring up to 200 mm of rain in 24 hours on Okinawa, Amami and southern Kyushu. More than 500 flights were canceled, Naha Airport was closed, and about 400 scheduled flights were scrapped, halting most air traffic to the islands. Toyota Motor Corp suspended production at nine factories on the same day.
The typhoon also affected the already‑reeling Kumamoto prefecture, where roughly 6,700 residents remain in evacuation centres after a recent magnitude‑7.1 earthquake. Injuries were reported, including four people, two of them in their 70s, who were hurt by strong winds. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of heat‑stroke risks as temperatures could reach 36 °C. After passing Japan, Dolphin moved toward China’s eastern coast, where authorities issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rain in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan and surrounding provinces, with wind speeds up to 42 m/s. The storm set a new record as the easternmost‑forming typhoon to make landfall in China since 1951, surpassing Typhoon Mangkhut’s 2018 record.
