Typhoon Dolphin causes mass evacuations and record rainfall in China
Typhoon Dolphin, the 13th typhoon of the season in China, has caused widespread disruption across eastern and central China. After making landfall in Yuhuan, Zhejiang, with winds of 151 km/h, the system has weakened into a tropical storm but continues to move through Hubei and toward Henan.
More than 1.6 million people have been evacuated preventively, including significant numbers in Wenzhou, Taizhou, Shanghai, and Fujian province. The storm has caused severe logistical issues, with over 940 flights canceled at Shanghai's two major airports, reducing operational capacity by nearly 40 percent.
Shanghai has experienced record-breaking weather, with rainfall levels reaching 312.9 mm in 24 hours at one station and nearly 400 mm in the Pudong district, marking the highest 24-hour rainfall recorded in the city in over 150 years. Economic impacts are already being felt, with over 5,200 insurance claims filed in Shanghai alone, totaling an estimated 94.8 million yuan in losses.
Meteorologists warn that the storm's remnants, interacting with western troughs, may bring heavy to torrential rain, potential tornadoes, and thunderstorms to several provinces, including Anhui, Henan, and Beijing, through the end of the week.
