Typhoon Dujuan causes deaths and massive destruction in Japan
Typhoon Dujuan has caused significant destruction across eastern Japan, resulting in at least 10 to 11 deaths and leaving four people missing. The storm brought record-breaking rainfall, with Oshima recording 832 mm in 48 hours, triggering widespread landslides and flooding, particularly in the Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures.
Infrastructure damage has been extensive. Approximately 659 buildings were reported damaged or destroyed, and over 48,000 households in the Chiba, Kanagawa, Yamanashi, and Shizuoka regions experienced power outages. Transportation has also been severely disrupted; nearly 500 flights were canceled at Tokyo's Haneda and Narita airports, and JR East reported significant railway disruptions, with some sections in Chiba potentially requiring three months for repairs.
Authorities issued evacuation orders for more than 1.9 million people across six prefectures, including Saitama, Ibaraki, Chiba, Tokyo, Shizuoka, and Kanagawa. The typhoon was eventually downgraded to an extratropical cyclone as it moved away from the coast.
