Typhoon Dujuan causes deaths and record rainfall in Japan
Typhoon Dujuan has struck Japan, causing significant casualties and widespread destruction, particularly in the regions surrounding Tokyo. Authorities report that at least seven people have died and five remain missing following devastating landslides and flooding. The fatalities include five deaths in Chiba Prefecture and two in Kanagawa Prefecture.
The storm brought record-breaking rainfall to several areas. Oshima island recorded 832 mm of rain within 48 hours, more than double its average for September, while Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward saw a 24-hour record of 282.5 mm. These extreme conditions triggered massive landslides and inundated residential areas.
Infrastructure damage is extensive. Approximately 58,000 households in Chiba Prefecture lost electricity, and over 460 homes sustained damage. Transportation was heavily disrupted, with more than 275 flights cancelled. The typhoon also forced the early closure of the Tokyo Game Show.
Emergency services continue search-and-rescue operations for those missing. While the typhoon has begun to move away from the coastline toward the Pacific, authorities warn that the risk of further flooding and landslides remains high due to saturated soil.
