Typhoon Krovanh shifts course toward Japan, impacting southern South Korea

Typhoon Krovanh, the 24th typhoon of the season, has shifted its trajectory away from the Korean Peninsula toward the waters east of Japan. While the storm is expected to weaken into a tropical depression near Kagoshima by August 8, its indirect effects continue to impact southern South Korea.

Jeju Island remains under heavy wind and wave warnings. Strong gusts exceeding 25 m/s have been reported in mountainous areas, and sea waves are expected to reach up to 5 meters. Previous indirect impacts on Jeju on August 4 resulted in a fatal accident at Jeju Port when a crane collapsed on a barge, killing a vessel owner and injuring a crane operator. Other reported damages include fallen trees, damaged traffic lights, and disruptions to flights and ferry services.

In addition to Jeju, wind advisories have been issued for Busan and parts of Jeollanam-do, including Yeosu and Wando. The Korea Meteorological Administration warns that strong winds and high seas may persist until August 8, advising maritime operators and residents to prepare for falling objects and dangerous sea conditions.
