Typhoon No. 30 approaches Kyushu as false weather alerts hit car navigation systems

Typhoon No. 30 (Chan-pa) is moving through the Philippine Sea with intense force, maintaining a central pressure of 900 hectopascals. While its direct impact on Kyushu remains uncertain, the Japan Meteorological Agency warns that the storm is expected to reach the waters near Tsushima by October 26, necessitating close monitoring of its path.

In a related incident involving weather information, the Kyushu Regional Development Bureau reported that false emergency alerts were broadcast to car navigation systems via the VICS network on the afternoon of October 22. Drivers in seven prefectures across Kyushu received incorrect pop-up notifications regarding Level 5 and Level 4 heavy rain warnings and dangerous underpasses. The error occurred during an internal system test in preparation for typhoon season and was discovered following reports from the public. The bureau has issued an apology and pledged to prevent recurrence.

Additionally, the Fukuoka District Meteorological Observatory has warned residents of northern Kyushu to remain vigilant against lightning, sudden gusts, and heavy rain due to unstable atmospheric conditions caused by a passing front.
