Typhoon Noul triggers evacuations and flight cancellations in China

Typhoon Noul made landfall early Sunday in Guangdong province, bringing gale‑force winds and heavy rain to southern China and neighboring Hong Kong. Chinese authorities issued the highest red alert, suspended train services, closed schools, and ordered the evacuation of more than 340,000 residents from vulnerable coastal and low‑lying areas. In Hong Kong the observatory raised the storm warning to Signal No. 9 before lowering it to Signal No. 8, cancelling over 700 flights and halting most public transport. A large scaffolding structure collapsed but caused no injuries. Macau also raised its typhoon warning, cancelled 22 flights and temporarily suspended passenger ferry services.

The storm is expected to bring 150‑600 mm of rain across Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi and Hunan, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides and flooding of rivers and reservoirs. Emergency teams have been mobilised, temporary shelters opened, and flood‑response alerts elevated to the highest levels in the affected provinces.
