Typhoon Prapiroon approaches Taiwan with potential for heavy rain

Typhoon Prapiroon, the 29th typhoon of the year, is approaching Taiwan's eastern waters. The storm has reached strong typhoon status, with maximum sustained winds of 51 meters per second and gusts reaching 63 meters per second.

The Central Weather Administration indicates that a maritime typhoon warning may be issued as early as the evening of October 21. The typhoon is expected to be closest to Taiwan between October 23 and 24, potentially bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the northern and eastern regions, including Yilan, Hualien, Taipei, and Keelung.

Weather patterns are expected to shift starting October 21 as the northeast monsoon strengthens, leading to cooler temperatures and increased rainfall in northern Taiwan. While the typhoon's exact path remains uncertain—with possibilities ranging from passing north of the island to moving through the Bashi Channel—meteorologists warn that autumn typhoons are notoriously difficult to predict. Residents are advised to prepare for unstable weather and potential disruptions during the upcoming holiday period.
