Tyre underwater ruins see return of divers following ceasefire
Following a ceasefire after the Israel-Hezbollah war, divers are returning to the submerged archaeological sites off the coast of Tyre, Lebanon. The underwater ruins, which include stone walls, ancient structures, and a submerged road, are part of the city’s wider historical landscape.
Tyre, a former major Phoenician maritime city and later a Greek and Roman center, has its archaeological remains listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. While there were significant concerns regarding the preservation of land-based sites due to military strikes, diving operators report that the underwater ruins remained unaffected by the conflict.
Although visitor numbers have not yet returned to pre-war levels, interest in the “sunken city” is reportedly increasing daily. The sites continue to attract international divers interested in the city’s ancient history and its former role in Mediterranean trading networks.
