Tyrol Alps: Rockfalls close hiking trails and fatal climbing accident reported

Two separate mountain incidents have been reported in the Tyrol region of the Alps. In the Lechtaler Alps, a rockfall occurred near the Pfeitkopf on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Authorities in Imst and Tarrenz have issued warnings of “acute danger to life” due to falling rocks. As a result, two hiking trails have been closed indefinitely: hiking trail 601, which is part of the European E4 long-distance path between Hinterbergjoch and Tarrenton Alm, and the Heiterwand North path leading to the Heiterwandhütte. No injuries were reported from the rockfall.

In a separate incident on the Pyramidenspitze in the Walchsee municipality, a mountain hiker died following a fall. On Sunday around 11:20 a.m., the individual reportedly fell approximately 60 meters over steep rocky terrain during a partially rope-secured descent. Although other hikers alerted emergency services, medical personnel could only confirm the man's death at the scene. The identity of the deceased and the exact cause of the accident are currently under investigation by the Innsbruck public prosecutor's office.
