Tyrol authorizes three more municipalities to deploy speed cameras
The state of Tyrol has authorized three additional municipalities—Bad Häring, St. Johann in Tirol, and Wattens—to independently conduct speed limit enforcement using radar devices. This follows the precedent set by the municipality of Kundl, which was the first in Austria to utilize such a transfer regulation.
Under this measure, municipalities can monitor speed compliance on both state and municipal roads within their territories. The initiative aims to increase traffic safety at sensitive locations and reduce the workload of the police. Traffic Councilor René Zumtobel noted that speed limits are essential for safety and that continuous monitoring is necessary to ensure compliance.
Financially, municipalities retain 80 percent of the revenue generated from speed enforcement on municipal roads, while all revenue from state roads goes to the state. Local officials have already begun technical and administrative preparations, including identifying legally and technically viable locations for the radar installations.
