Tyrol faces shortage of specialists for prenatal screenings

A shortage of specialized medical professionals in Tyrol is making it increasingly difficult for pregnant women to access essential prenatal screenings. Reports indicate that patients, including one woman who was rejected 12 times, are struggling to schedule nuchal translucency tests and detailed organ ultrasounds.

These specific examinations must be performed within a strict window of pregnancy to be effective. The shortage is attributed to a lack of certified, specially trained doctors capable of performing these procedures. While medical professionals are reportedly performing their duties well, they have reached their maximum capacity.

The situation has become severe enough that patients from Tyrol are seeking specialists in neighboring Salzburg, where availability is slightly better. Although these screenings are often paid for privately rather than fully covered by public health insurance, even private payment does not guarantee a timely appointment due to the lack of qualified personnel.
