Deutsche Bahn expands alcohol ban to major German stations
Deutsche Bahn is expanding its alcohol consumption ban to several major German railway stations. As of September 1, 2026, the ban applies to station halls and platforms at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin-Gesundbrunnen, Kiel, and Braunschweig.
Invoking its house rights, the company aims to improve passenger and employee safety, reduce alcohol-related violence and conflicts, and decrease cleaning costs. Violators may face a formal request to leave the premises, with repeat offenses potentially leading to more severe consequences.
The ban does not prohibit the purchase of alcohol or its consumption within station gastronomy, such as restaurants or onboard bistro services in long-distance trains. Deutsche Bahn plans to implement this ban at approximately 5,400 stations across Germany in a phased rollout, scheduled for completion by October 15, 2026.
