Tirol Fernpass tunnel hit by protests, legal and environmental disputes
The proposed Fernpass tunnel in Tirol has become the focus of multiple disputes. Environmental lawyer Walter Tschon criticised the nature‑conservation assessment, stating that the project would have been rejected in nine out of ten cases and that the public‑interest justification is fabricated. The Alpine Convention protection body CIPRA argued that the Fernpass road qualifies as a high‑ranking Alpine crossing and that expanding it with a tunnel would breach the Alpine traffic protocol. The Tirol government rejected the claim, insisting the tunnel does not constitute a high‑ranking road. Green party member Gebi Mair warned that the expansion would endanger the existing truck‑weight ban.
Meanwhile, a citizen initiative organised protests for 1 August, blocking the Fernpass route for about two hours and urging motorists to avoid the area. The demonstrations target the "Fernpass package" of the state government, which has also been criticised by the CIPRA legal service.
