Tyrol pushes tourism reforms with bed‑cap call and tax fairness demand

The Lista Fritz party has made tourism its focus in the July Tyrol state parliament, urging reforms to increase transparency, control and fairness. Party spokesperson Markus Sint said, “Der Tourismus gehört zu Tirol, deshalb braucht es Reformen. Mehr Transparenz, Kontrolle und Fairness.” The party proposes a fairer tourism levy, arguing that only those who truly benefit should pay, and calls for reinstating case‑by‑case assessments that were removed by the ÖVP and SPÖ. It also demands a “Bettenstop” to enforce the legally set ceiling of 330,000 accommodation beds, which has already been exceeded, and seeks stronger oversight of the 34 tourism associations' €243 million budget by the Tyrolean Court of Auditors.

Meanwhile, ÖVP tourism councilor Mario Gerber told an Igls tourism forum that certain regions, such as the Außerfern, parts of East Tyrol, the Inntal and the Sellraintal, could accommodate additional hotel beds and that overtourism is not a concern. He highlighted tourism as a driver of prosperity for the valleys and promoted year‑round tourism initiatives.

The contrasting positions illustrate a debate within Tyrol over how to balance tourism growth with housing, environmental impact and fiscal equity.
