Tyrol uses new thermal method to remove Asian hornet nest

Authorities in Kössen, Tyrol, have successfully utilized a new thermal method to remove an Asian hornet nest, marking the first use of this technique in Austria. The process, known as ‘velutina Steam EX’, uses a pipe system to deliver hot steam to nests located high in tree canopies without the use of pesticides or biocides. Following the thermal treatment, returning workers are vacuumed through the same system before the nest is removed.

The Asian hornet is an invasive species that poses a significant threat to local biodiversity, particularly honeybees and wild bees. Officials noted that a single colony can contain up to 2,000 insects, which can consume hundreds of bees daily. The expansion of the species in neighboring Germany serves as a warning for the speed at which the insects can spread once established. Residents are encouraged to report sightings but are strictly advised not to attempt to remove nests themselves.
