Tzuyu of TWICE reportedly offered Chinese activity support tied to political stance

Reports from Taiwanese media suggest that Tzuyu, a member of the K-pop group TWICE, may have been offered support for activities in China on the condition that she publicly supports the ‘One China’ principle. According to reports, entertainment industry figures recently contacted Tzuyu’s family to discuss potential expansion into the Chinese market, offering full support for television appearances and concerts if she expresses a stance that ‘Taiwanese are Chinese.’

Chao Hsiao-wei, an industry figure known for managing Taiwanese stars in China, denied that any formal contract has been signed and stated that discussions regarding a move to China have not progressed, as Tzuyu is currently in contract renewal negotiations with JYP Entertainment. He also denied that the contact with her family involved political elements.

In Taiwan, security officials have noted that China may be targeting Tzuyu due to her significant influence among the younger generation. Tzuyu addressed the rumors on the fan platform Bubble, telling followers, ‘Please do not worry too much.’ This follows a 2016 incident where the singer issued an apology regarding the use of the Taiwanese flag, a moment that remains a significant point of discussion in regional politics.
