U Minh Ha hunters use traditional methods to catch eels

In the U Minh Ha forest region, local hunters utilize traditional methods to catch eels, a practice that remains a significant part of the local cultural identity. Between the sixth and twelfth lunar months, when heavy rains cause dense vegetation to grow, eels migrate to canals covered in aquatic plants to seek shelter.

Hunters use specialized traps known as 'trúm,' traditionally made from old thorny bamboo but now often replaced by plastic tubes for convenience. The effectiveness of the trap relies heavily on the 'hom'—a smooth basket made of split bamboo—and a specialized bait. Beyond standard ingredients like snails, crabs, or minced fish, hunters in U Minh Ha use secret recipes involving fish oil and aromatic herbs like coriander or sawtooth herb to attract eels through scent. Some even add garlic and chili to the bait to create a spicy sensation that stimulates the eels.
