U. S. Steel Košice to receive 349.59 million euros for decarbonization
Documents were signed at the Government Office of the Slovak Republic to provide funding from the Modernization Fund for the decarbonization of steel and technical gas production at U. S. Steel Košice (to be renamed Nippon Steel Slovakia s. r. o. as of October 1, 2026).
The approved support totals 349.59 million euros. These funds are designated for installing an electric arc furnace and an air separation unit. The projects aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2.96 million tons of CO2 annually, which represents about 8.7% of Slovakia's total annual emissions.
Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that the investment confirms the future of steel production in eastern Slovakia and supports the transformation toward low-carbon technologies to meet climate goals of both Slovakia and the European Union.
