U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. prepares for tour return after risky surgery

U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. has revealed he underwent risky neck surgery to overcome career-threatening injuries caused by decades of drumming. Despite medical advice to retire due to damage to his neck, shoulder, and knees, Mullen Jr. chose to undergo the procedure to continue performing with the band.

Reports indicate that rehearsals are currently underway for an unannounced stadium tour, marking the band’s first large-scale outing since 2019. While Mullen Jr. intends to rejoin his bandmates, he noted that his physical stamina may limit his performance time, stating, “Even if I can’t play for two and a half hours — if I can do an hour, that’s enough for me.”

The band is also preparing for the release of their 16th studio album, scheduled for November 13, 2026. Guitarist The Edge confirmed Mullen Jr.’s involvement in the recording process, stating, “I don’t think we would’ve made an album if Larry hadn’t been able to play.”
