U20 Japanese Athletics Championships see standout performances
At the U20 Japanese Athletics Championships held at Kusanagi Sports Park in Shizuoka, several standout performances were recorded.
In the women’s 5000m, Kairi Ikeno of Aoyama Gakuin University secured victory with a time of 15:54.44. This marks a significant achievement for the university’s newly established women’s ekiden team. Coach Susumu Hara noted that while Ikeno dealt with injuries earlier in the year, her consistent training has led to this success, expressing hope that she will aim for the 14-minute mark during her university career. In the men’s 5000m, Seiya Yamamoto of Josai University won the event, which featured only one participant, clocking a time of 14:13.79.
In the men’s 200m, 17-year-old Daiki Goto of Rakunan High School advanced to the finals after posting a top qualifying time of 20.63 seconds. Goto, who recently earned a silver medal in the 400m hurdles at the Asian Games, demonstrated significant speed during the heats, finishing comfortably at the top of his heat.
