U20 World Athletics Championships showcase teenage stars nearing senior elite level

The under‑20 World Athletics Championships opened on Wednesday, featuring a slate of teenage athletes whose performances already rank among senior world leaders.

U.S. sprinter Tate Taylor posted a 19.75 s 200 m, placing him fifth on the senior world list, while Australian Gout was forced to miss the meet after an injury. Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas ran 22.11 s for 200 m (10th among seniors) and 10.98 s for 100 m (30th senior), making him the event’s top sprint favourite. Italy’s Serena Di Fabio recorded 20:42.74 in the 5,000 m walk, a time that sits fourth on the senior rankings. French pole‑vaulter Izobelle Louison‑Roe cleared 1.95 m, a mark that would rank 15th among adults. Jamaican 100 m specialist Gary Card ran 9.93 s, the 22nd‑fastest senior time, and Uganda’s Charity Cherop posted 14:39.38 for 5,000 m, placing her 20th on the senior list. Sweden’s multi‑event hopeful Liam Belo Da Silva approached the 8,000‑point barrier in the decathlon, while Estonia’s Henri Apri recorded a 5.66 m pole‑vault, 16 cm shy of the senior best. Several athletes, such as Ethiopia’s Marta Alemayehu, are already competing at senior‑level standards but will not take part in the junior championships.
