Uļa film selected as Latvia's Oscar candidate

Latvia has selected the feature film ‘Uļa’, directed by Viesturs Kairiša, as its official candidate for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The decision was made by a national expert commission established by the National Film Centre and approved by the Academy.

Produced by Ego Media, ‘Uļa’ stars Kārlis Arnolds Avots, who received international acclaim and a Best Actor award at the Jerusalem Film Festival for his performance. The film previously held its world premiere in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Two films were submitted for consideration this year: ‘Uļa’ and Dzintars Dreibergs’ ‘Tīklā. TTT leģendas dzimšana’. After evaluating the aesthetic qualities of both works, the commission chose Kairiša’s film to represent the country in the upcoming Oscar competition.
