UABCS and SENASICA launch training to prevent cattle screw worm

The Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS), in coordination with the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA), has implemented training programs for students in animal science and veterinary medicine regarding the cattle screw worm.

The training focuses on the prevention, surveillance, and early detection of this pest. The cattle screw worm is the larval stage of a fly species that develops in the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, including livestock, pets, and potentially humans. The larvae typically enter through wounds, causing severe lesions and infections.

Noé Demetrio Sánchez Isiordia, the state representative for SENASICA, noted that while the pest is present in other regions of Mexico, Baja California and Baja California Sur currently remain free of the infestation. This status necessitates reinforced monitoring and preventive measures to protect the regional livestock sector.
