UABCS hosts inaugural Algae Festival to promote marine science
The Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) hosted the inaugural Algae Festival in La Paz, Baja California Sur. Organized by the Marine Botany Research Laboratory in collaboration with the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste, the event aimed to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and the general public.
The festival featured academic lectures, informative stands, tastings, and the sale of various products to demonstrate the ecological, scientific, and productive potential of algae. Dr. Manuel Coronado García, representing the university rector, emphasized the need to transform the social perception of algae, which have historically been viewed by some sectors as mere waste despite their essential role in oxygen production through photosynthesis.
Coordinated by researcher Dr. Juan Manuel López Vivas, the initiative seeks to highlight the importance of these organisms for global ecosystems and to explore new opportunities for innovation and biodiversity-driven development.
