UABCS launches updated MeteoUABCS storm prediction portal

The Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) has launched version 3.0 of its meteorological monitoring portal, MeteoUABCS. Developed through the Laboratorio de Investigación en Gestión Integral del Riesgo (LIGIR), the updated platform introduces a predictive model for short-duration convective storms, locally known as ‘Toritos’.

This new model analyzes various variables to provide impact warnings up to 10 minutes before rainfall occurs, allowing residents to prepare for storms at home or work. The project, which began in late 2024, utilizes 10 meteorological stations located in Guerrero Negro, Loreto, Cd. Constitución, La Paz, and Cabo San Lucas.

The portal provides real-time updates every five minutes, tracking parameters such as temperature, humidity, solar radiation, precipitation, and thermal sensation. It also includes indices for heat danger, wind speed, and air quality, alongside tools for monitoring tropical cyclones using satellite imagery and NOAA data.
