UACJ students study urban landscape of El Paso and Ciudad Juárez
Five students from the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) participated in a field study of the border region, exploring the shared history and urban contrasts between Ciudad Juárez and El Paso, Texas.
Led by Dr. María Teresa Vázquez Castillo, the group examined architecture, transportation, economy, and culture. The tour began in downtown Ciudad Juárez, noting the economic influence of Chinese migration and the presence of medical tourism. After crossing the Santa Fe International Bridge, the students observed border infrastructure, including surveillance cameras and security fencing.
In El Paso, the group studied the effects of changing border mobility on local commerce, noting that some businesses have closed due to a decrease in consumers crossing from the Mexican side.
