Burkina Faso strengthens US ties and Sahelian media sovereignty
Burkina Faso is actively redefining its international and regional relationships. In Ouagadougou, Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré and US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Michaels inaugurated a joint working group to revitalize bilateral cooperation based on mutual respect and sovereignty. This new framework aims to reconfigure relations not only with Burkina Faso but also with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Simultaneously, the 15th edition of the African Universities of Communication (UACO) was held in Ouagadougou. Led by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, the summit focused on “informational sovereignty” and the ability of African actors to control their own narratives amidst global communication wars. The event saw the signing of an alliance between media entities from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to foster content exchange and joint digital strategies.
In Niger, President Abdourahamane Tiani appointed Oumar Fatimata Marafa Salifou as the new Director General of the state oil company, SONIDEP, to strengthen national control over the petroleum supply chain. Meanwhile, Captain Ibrahim Traoré marked four years in power in Burkina Faso, highlighting security gains and economic projects while facing scrutiny regarding human rights and democratic processes.
