UAE Accelerates Investment in Africa and Leads Digital Finance Initiatives
The United Arab Emirates is rapidly expanding its economic footprint across Africa, with Emirati firms announcing projects worth more than $160 billion since 2017. Investments span ports in Senegal, renewable‑energy schemes in Egypt, copper and gold mining rights from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Guinea, and large agricultural leases aimed at food‑security for the Gulf. Key players such as International Holding Company and other state‑linked entities are driving the push, positioning the UAE as a major source of foreign capital for infrastructure and critical minerals.
At the same time, the UAE is shaping a leading digital‑finance ecosystem. The Central Bank of the UAE has introduced a clear regulatory framework, including a licensing regime for payment tokens launched in 2024 and the national Digital Dirham programme that places the central bank at the core of the market. These measures give fintech firms regulatory certainty, encouraging investment and positioning the UAE as a competitive hub for digital assets and financial services.
Both strategies reflect the UAE’s broader ambition to diversify its economy, secure resource supplies for the global energy transition, and build a world‑leading digital economy.
