UAE authorities enhance flood preparedness and drainage infrastructure

The United Arab Emirates has launched comprehensive measures to prepare for the upcoming rainy season, focusing on infrastructure readiness and emergency response. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure is conducting preventive maintenance on federal roads, including the inspection of 17 pumping stations and 800 stormwater drainage culverts. To mitigate flash flood risks, the Ministry is utilizing a 24-hour smart monitoring system for dams and wadis, which uses sensors and surveillance cameras to provide early flood warnings to national authorities.

In Dubai, the Municipality has mobilized 675 personnel and 1,100 pieces of specialized machinery to manage potential water accumulation. Preparations include the cleaning of over 70,000 drainage inlets and the establishment of 10 temporary water-collection lakes designed to divert runoff and reduce pressure on the primary drainage network. Local authorities are also coordinating with real estate developers and free zone authorities to ensure private infrastructure is prepared for unsettled weather.
