UAE calls for diplomacy and maritime security at UN General Assembly
Addressing the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, UAE Minister of State Khalifa Shaheen Al-Marar called for increased reliance on diplomacy, dialogue, and mediation to resolve global conflicts. He emphasized the importance of respecting state sovereignty, international law, and the UN Charter while rejecting the unlawful use of force or coercion.
Al-Marar specifically addressed the ongoing occupation of the three Emirati islands—Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa—by Iran, stating that the UAE seeks a peaceful settlement through direct negotiations or the International Court of Justice. He also highlighted the necessity of protecting maritime security, freedom of navigation, and the safe flow of global supply chains and energy.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, the Minister noted that the UAE has conducted 26 mediation operations, facilitating the exchange of nearly 8,000 prisoners between Russia and Ukraine. He advocated for a lasting peace based on territorial integrity and sovereignty. Additionally, the UAE expressed support for peace efforts in Yemen, Libya, Sudan, and several other regions facing humanitarian crises.
