UAE employment regulations regarding visas and labour cards
In the United Arab Emirates, working under a tourist or visit visa is strictly prohibited, regardless of whether the work is paid or unpaid. Jobseekers must obtain the necessary work authorization and appropriate immigration status before commencing any duties. Even activities labeled as “training” or “trial shifts” require legal authorization. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in severe consequences, including fines, imprisonment, and deportation.
The UAE labour card, issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), serves as the official work permit record for employees of mainland private sector companies. This electronic record links a worker to a licensed employer and details their job title, nationality, and permit validity. While mainland employees use MOHRE, staff in free zones are typically managed by their respective free zone authorities.
Employees and employers can verify labour card status through the MOHRE smart app or website. Maintaining accurate labour card records is essential for visa renewals, salary disputes, and various administrative applications, such as tenancy or banking services.
