UAE National Security Advisor meets U.S. envoy to discuss Iran crisis

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff held a private meeting with UAE National Security Advisor Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Sardinia to discuss strategies regarding the Iranian crisis. The discussions occurred amid intensified efforts by the Trump administration to exert economic pressure on Iran and ensure the security of oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, where the UAE serves as a primary partner.

The meeting follows the announcement of ‘Operation Economic Outcast’ by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, a plan designed to impose heavy sanctions on entities and countries conducting trade with Iran. In a related move, the U.S. Treasury has taken steps to disconnect UAE branches of Banque Misr from the U.S. financial system due to their business dealings with Iran, a move that would block their access to dollar transactions.

In response, the Central Bank of the UAE has initiated an ‘immediate review’ of the transactions conducted by Banque Misr branches with Iran. This development comes as the UAE moves toward halting trade and financial exchanges with Iran, despite a recent visit from an Iranian delegation to Abu Dhabi that sought assistance with food and medicine and requested that the UAE refrain from cooperating with U.S. sanctions.
