Morocco advances defense and aerospace industry at Marrakech Airshow
At the eighth edition of the Marrakech Airshow, Morocco announced several strategic agreements to bolster its domestic defense and aerospace sectors. A key development is a letter of intent between the Moroccan National Defense Administration and Harmattan AI to develop and locally produce the IRIFI autonomous strike system. The IRIFI drone is designed for long-range missions of up to 2,000 kilometers and features navigation capabilities that do not rely on GNSS or satellite signals, utilizing optical guidance for terminal precision.
In the aerospace sector, Royal Air Maroc signed an agreement with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to increase local sourcing, aiming to replace up to 60% of certain imports with Moroccan alternatives. Additionally, the African Center of Manufacturing Excellence (ACME) was formalized through a consortium involving the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, Boeing, Airbus, Safran, and Lockheed Martin. This center aims to enhance advanced manufacturing and research capabilities in Africa.
Other notable developments include ABA Technology presenting its ‘Burj’ anti-drone system and Safran establishing an industrial branch in Morocco to develop engine lubrication systems. The event also highlighted Morocco's growing aerospace export potential, with projections suggesting annual exports could reach $5 billion by 2029.
