UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed assigns brothers to spearhead Iran détente

UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has tasked three of his brothers – State Vice‑President Mansour bin Zayed, Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed and National Security Adviser Tahnoun bin Zayed – with leading efforts to ease tensions with Iran. The initiative follows the United States‑Iran cease‑fire agreement, which Abu Dhabi views as an opportunity to shift from hostility toward pragmatic engagement.

Early contacts included a phone call between Mansour bin Zayed and Iranian Consultative Council president Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and a subsequent call by Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed to his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. Emirati officials said the war had been “a real test for all” and that the Gulf states are “hostages of their geography,” prompting a more flexible approach.

The UAE hopes to revive trade with Iran, vital to Dubai’s economy which hosts hundreds of thousands of Iranian residents. While the Emirates deny direct financial transfers, they have expressed interest in investing in Iranian energy, ports and logistics once sanctions are lifted. The US‑Iran memorandum to extend the cease‑fire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz has accelerated these diplomatic and economic moves.
