UAE raises clean energy target to 35% by 2031
The United Arab Emirates has updated its clean energy targets, aiming for a 35% contribution to electricity production by 2030–2031. Speaking at the 50th edition of the Middle East Energy exhibition in Dubai, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Al Mazrouei stated that the shift toward cleaner sources is driven by commercial viability and economic sense rather than bias.
The UAE is expanding its renewable capacity, highlighted by a major project in Abu Dhabi involving 5.2 GW of solar power paired with 19 GWh of battery storage. This project is designed to provide 1 GW of continuous, round-the-clock solar electricity, which the Minister noted is highly competitive with natural gas prices.
In addition to energy transitions, the UAE has demonstrated strong economic performance. According to the Legatum Prosperity Index 2026, the country ranks ninth globally in economic freedom and first in the Arab world, supported by policies focused on economic diversification, infrastructure development, and ease of doing business.
