UAE recalibrates foreign policy amid regional tensions
The United Arab Emirates is recalibrating its foreign policy in response to regional instability and tensions with Iran. During the Arab Media Summit in Dubai, UAE officials emphasized a strategy of maintaining essential communication with Tehran while noting that rebuilding trust following attacks on Gulf states could take years.
Presidential adviser Anwar Gargash stated that while the UAE must keep channels open with Iran due to geographic proximity, the country remains focused on defending its sovereignty and protecting economic development. He also noted that Houthi control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait poses a significant concern for the international economy.
Minister of State Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi described this shift as a recalibration of strategic partnerships. This includes strengthening ties with nations like Germany—highlighting a commitment of over €40bn in defense, security, and technology—and expanding the global presence of the UAE-based defense manufacturer Edge Group, which plans to open an office in France.
