UAE residency and work permit requirements for 2026

In the United Arab Emirates, business founders and employees must adhere to specific regulatory requirements regarding residency and employment documentation. To work or invest legally, founders must obtain an Emirates ID through the Identity and Citizenship Portal (ICP) within 60 days of entry. Issuance fees for the ID range from AED 100 for a 3-year validity to AED 270 for a 10-year period, excluding mandatory medical fitness testing at DHA-approved centres.

Regarding employment, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) oversees 13 different types of work permits. For most categories, the hiring company is responsible for the application process, including costs for residence visas, medical testing, and the Emirates ID. Failure to obtain a proper work permit for an employee can result in fines ranging from Dh50,000 to Dh200,000. The only exception is the freelance permit, which individuals may apply for directly.
