UAE suspends all trade and financial transactions with Iran
The United Arab Emirates has suspended all commercial activities, trade, and financial transactions with Iran until further notice. This decision follows an incident in which ballistic missiles targeted maritime traffic in the Persian Gulf, triggering nationwide shelter warnings for UAE residents.
The suspension marks a major rupture between the two nations, severing a commercial lifeline that accounts for approximately one-third of Iran’s imports. While Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei denied that Tehran launched the missiles, Emirati defense assessments concluded the projectiles were directed at maritime traffic.
The move is expected to have significant economic consequences, particularly in the fresh fruit and vegetable sector. Iranian products have historically held a dominant position in the UAE and Gulf markets due to their competitive pricing and proximity. Industry experts note that replacing these supplies will be difficult, as the suspension follows months of increasing restrictions and rising transport costs.
