IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings conclude in Bangkok

The 2026 IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings concluded in Bangkok, Thailand, following a week of discussions involving representatives from 191 countries. Key global economic risks identified during the sessions included rising external debt, which has reached $12.3 trillion, increasing energy costs due to conflicts in West Asia, and the potential economic strains caused by the artificial intelligence boom.

World Bank President Ajay Banga highlighted a looming employment gap, noting that 1.2 billion young people in developing nations will reach working age over the next 15 years, while job creation remains insufficient. To address this, the Bank reported raising a record $112 billion in private capital during fiscal 2026.

Parallel discussions addressed specialized issues such as the regulation of crypto assets and stablecoins to balance financial inclusion with stability. Additionally, the Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions (AAMFI) held a high-level panel focused on mobilizing African capital for regional development.

Civil society groups, through the Asia Regional People’s Declaration, challenged the official proceedings by highlighting the debt crisis in Asian nations like Pakistan, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, noting that many countries now spend more on debt servicing than on health or education.
