UAE to propose MENAFATF initiative on fraud and money laundering

The United Arab Emirates, in its capacity as the chair of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF), intends to propose a regional initiative to study fraud patterns and associated money laundering. Hamad Saif Al Zaabi, President of MENAFATF, announced the proposal during a press conference held alongside the 15th United Nations Conference on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi.

The initiative aims to enhance risk understanding and foster cooperation among member states to combat financial crimes. The proposal, which will be presented at the group's next general meeting in Abu Dhabi, seeks to build a shared regional knowledge base to monitor the types, methods, and scale of fraud in the region. This includes developing indicators to detect emerging patterns and methods used to launder fraudulent proceeds.

Key areas of focus for the study include banking and financial fraud, electronic, investment, and real estate fraud, as well as fraud involving money transfers, hawala channels, and virtual assets or digital trading platforms. Additionally, the project aims to address challenges related to freezing, seizing, and recovering criminal proceeds, including those from cyber fraud and trade-based money laundering.
