UAE VAT regulations impact Indian exporters and local businesses
The United Arab Emirates utilizes a Value Added Tax (VAT) system with a standard rate of 5% on most taxable goods and services. For VAT-registered businesses, tax obligations are determined by the relationship between Output VAT, which is the tax charged to customers on sales, and Input VAT, which is the tax paid on eligible business purchases and expenses.
Indian exporters and service providers conducting business with UAE customers must navigate distinct tax requirements in both jurisdictions. While a transaction may qualify as a zero-rated export under Indian Goods and Services Tax (GST), it may still trigger VAT obligations in the UAE, such as import VAT, reverse-charge mechanisms, or mandatory VAT registration for non-resident suppliers.
Key considerations for cross-border trade include determining the importer of record, the location of goods, and the VAT registration status of the UAE customer. Businesses are advised to clearly allocate responsibilities for customs, invoicing, and tax in their contracts to ensure compliance before shipments occur.
