UAEH Tulancingo Campus Functions as Ecological Bird Corridor

Researchers from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo documented that the Tulancingo University campus serves as an ecological corridor for at least 47 bird species, including both native and migratory birds. Monitoring between 2021 and 2023 identified three species listed as threatened under Mexico's NOM‑059 regulation – the savanna sparrow, the clear‑crowned night heron, and the northern bittern – and two species under special protection, the peregrine falcon and the cinnamon‑buzzard.

The study, led by Andrea Paloma Zepeda Velázquez of the university’s veterinary and animal science laboratory, aims to raise awareness among students and the public about the importance of protecting urban wildlife habitats. Findings will support preventive veterinary measures and broader environmental health initiatives, emphasizing that healthy bird populations reflect overall ecosystem quality.
