UAEMéx hosts conference on migration and social inequality

During a conference titled “Migrations, corporalities, social justice and peace: for whom?”, researcher María Emilia Tijoux from the University of Chile addressed the systemic inequalities inherent in human migration. Speaking at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMéx), Tijoux explained that migration occurs within pre-existing social hierarchies that shape the experiences of displaced individuals based on gender, class, nationality, and race.

Tijoux highlighted how migrants face social classifications and racist practices upon entering new territories, noting that physical bodies carry histories, languages, and accents that encounter varying levels of protection and recognition. The discussion emphasized how racialization, labor, borders, and the State contribute to the unequal distribution of justice and belonging.

UAEMéx Rector Martha Patricia Zarza Delgado noted that migration is a multi-causal phenomenon impacting social identity and development, stating that addressing the inequalities it generates is an urgent responsibility for the university.
