UAGro transparency demanded amid fee hikes and nepotism claims

Diana Bernabé Vega, a Morena legislator in Guerrero, has called for the Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero (UAGro) to increase transparency regarding its use of public funds. The request comes amid public indignation over rising school fees and allegations of nepotism within the institution.

Bernabé noted that school fees have seen significant increases, with high school enrollment fees rising to 1,400 pesos and postgraduate program costs increasing from 580 to 860 pesos. Additionally, semester contributions have risen from 3,000 to 4,825 pesos. The legislator emphasized that these costs place a heavy burden on low-income families.

The lawmaker also addressed reports of familial networks within the university, describing it as “nepotism in every sense of the word,” citing officials with salaries exceeding 60,000 pesos. While asserting that her inquiries do not aim to challenge the university's autonomy, she stated that “autonomy does not mean opacity” and that the institution must remain accountable to the community.
