UAT student wins national award for scientific video on devil fish

Karina Alejandra Zúñiga Camarena, a graduate student at the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT), has earned third place in the national Talento Joven Ciencia Audiovisual 2026 competition. Organized by the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP), the award was granted in the Aquaculture and Fishing Sector category.

Her winning video, titled “Presencia del pez diablo en el noreste de México, evidencia en Gómez Farías, Tamaulipas,” is part of her postgraduate thesis work. The audiovisual material documents the presence of the devil fish (Pterygoplichthys spp.) in northeastern Mexico, highlighting the threat this species poses to aquatic biodiversity and the resulting economic impact on local fishing communities.
