Ubatuba authorities investigate Indaiá River discoloration
The Civil Defense of Ubatuba has met with civil society representatives and environmental institutions to discuss the changing color of the Indaiá River. The situation affects riverside communities, such as Barra Seca, and has raised concerns regarding potential environmental and socioeconomic impacts.
Preliminary findings suggest that a landslide of soil and rocks in the Sumidouro region may be releasing material into the water. Heavy rainfall in September, totaling nearly 300 millimeters, is also being considered as a contributing factor.
While a conclusive report on sediment composition and water quality is still pending, authorities are coordinating with technical agencies to conduct further analyses. Discussions have also focused on the potential effects of sediment accumulation on water oxygenation, aquatic fauna, vegetation, local fishing, shellfish production, and tourism.
