Ubatuba begins reporting delinquent property taxpayers to credit agencies

The Ubatuba Finance Secretariat has begun sending delinquent IPTU (property tax) debts to credit protection services, including SPC and Serasa. This measure follows a recommendation from the São Paulo State Court of Auditors (TCESP) to improve municipal collection efficiency and aligns with National Council of Justice Resolution No. 541 of 2023, which encourages extrajudicial collection to reduce the burden on the judiciary.

The debts being processed cover the period between 2022 and 2025, totaling approximately R$ 62,216,196.94 across 5,440 taxpayers. Additionally, data shows that over 1,500 taxpayers have not paid any installments for the current year.

To ensure transparency, the city has hired a specialized company to notify residents via letter, email, and SMS. Officials have confirmed the legitimacy of these collections following reports of residents fearing scams. Taxpayers can regularize their status through in-person services or via the municipal website by paying the full amount or arranging installment plans.
